18.03.11 - Christchurch Earthquake Update Report

MAINZ Update:
From MAINZ Dean, Harry Lyon:

We are continuing to make real progress in finding alternative facilities so we can resume classes. We are currently negotiating with two recording facilities for Cert and Dip Audio practical classes that should be finalised next week.

We are still sorting through options for classroom and administration spaces and hope to have something finalised next week.

A reminder that you have until the 22 May to withdraw without having to pay any tuition fees. This gives you a chance to see how things are going, once we get our temporary facilities up and running, before having to make a decision. We still plan to complete the 2011 academic year before Christmas and want to see as many of our 2011 students graduate even if we have to have a graduation ceremony in 2012.

Gretchen is now working out of the MAINZ Auckland campus and is available on her usual email gretchenm@tpp.ac.nz or 0800 265 526 ext 8225.

If you have not already been in communication with your tutor, please do so ASAP via email, text, Facebook or call Gretchen on the toll‐free number above.

Live Sound Students:
A lease has been signed on temporary premises for Live Sound at 7 Lincoln Lane, (off Lincoln Rd, Moorhouse Ave end), map [HERE]

The lease on the building starts on Monday and Marcus will be there tidying the place up and would welcome a visit if you are nearby.

On Tuesday Live Sound will have a full class meeting beginning at 10.30am (to miss rush hour) that will include morning tea and a catch up.

Live Sound students Luke Rossiter and Luke McCormick have spent the last couple of weeks organising a gig in Hornby for April 2nd. You've probably already heard about it but if you want to find out more, request to join their group on Facebook which can be found [HERE]

Industry Training Update:
The Dean, Marion Smith, and Annabel Schuler from Education Support Services visited the CPIT Sullivan Ave campus on Thursday and spent time with staff and students.
The digger school students were in class for the day and their determination to keep moving with their studies and “get on with life” was inspiring.
Staff from the various areas were also on deck and doing a great job.

15.03.11 - Christchurch Earthquake Update Report

Industry Training Update:
From Shane Andrews, Programme Leader, Civil and Mining:

Late last week all of our students, less one who will be reassessed later this week, completed the practical assessment for their first aid course. They were in the middle of it when the quake hit.

Reece and Wes are holding strong with 12 students who are all still happy and keen to get on with it.

CPIT Sullivan Ave campus opened this week with many students showing their smiling faces. The campus ring-road is still dusted with liquefaction (myself, Reece and Wes moved a couple of truck loads). Other issues in the TPP area of the campus are being dealt with.

MAINZ Update:
From MAINZ Dean, Harry Lyon:

As mentioned in the last update, we have made some real progress in finding alternative facilities so we can resume classes.

We have signed a lease on space for Live Sound practical classes and Marcus will be at MAINZ Auckland this week putting together teaching resources for that were left at the Media Club.

Certificate Audio Engineering Mixing Consoles
by Tony Rabbet - Friday, 11 March 2011, 07:58 AM

Attention certificate Audio Engineering (first year)

Hey cert people

Sorry we missed yesterday's session, I was having power supply problems at home. All good for now. Check out this site for numerous video clips and watch in particular the clips regarding mixing consoles and equalisation.

Also read over the Mixing Console module taht you have, it is very detailed and you should get a good understanding of mixing consoles if you fully read and understand that.

Any questions please email me at tonyr@tpp.ac.nz or check out my Facebook page Tony Mainz.

We may be starting a new topic next week as Mixing Consoles needs hands on (touching the stuff) sessions to further understand the theory. We are working on that now.

Ivan will let us know further. If a new topic does start next week it will be Sound Perception and Measurement, which is a more theory based subject similar and further to Matt's Sound Wavwe theory subject.

You will need access to a scientific calculator, one that can calculate logarithms

thanks for your support and patience. I hope you are managing to learn in this awkward situation

Synthesis Lesson 2 now online
by Matt Scott - Thursday, 10 March 2011, 09:12 AM

Attention Diploma students:

I've posted some resources for Synthesis Lesson 2 on eCampus, under "DA11 Analogue and Digital Synthesis". http://ecampus.mainz.ac.nz/course/view.php?id=108

The idea is you can go ahead and teach yourself, when it suits you, at your own pace... And keep your learning going while we're sorting out a new premises.

Obviously we don't have access to the Korg MS-20... But I think that if you learn the THEORY of synthesis, you should be able to take that knowledge and apply it to any synthesizer.

If you don't have access to any kind of synthesizer, and you have access to a Mac... I've also put up some links to a free software synth, TL Bassline. It's a software recreation of the Roland SH-101, which is known as a good synthesizer to learn on.

TL Bassline is a VSTi, so you either need a DAW that can host VST plug-ins (Cubase, Ableton Live, Nuendo, FXPansion for Pro Tools etc), or I've put up a link to the Ugly VSTi Host - which is a free standalone VSTi host.

Have a look, see how you go, and drop me a line if you need any help - matts@tpp.ac.nz . If needed, I can be available on the Adobe Connect virtual classroom for a Q & A session.

Matt
